What
Your Private Practice Requires to Be Successful
Because
therapy deals with some of the most stressful experiences in
life, your value-oriented, education-based marketing materials need to show prospects that you are especially sensitive to
their
situations, concerns, and distress. They will not know
unless you tell them. But you are telling them not to
"sell" anything. You are telling them only to offer the best help they can get to solve their problems and
relieve their distress.
This
means you need to demonstrate
repeatedly that you know what they are going through and can help them in an empathetic and
growth-oriented
way. You need to communicate consistently that you have the experience and expertise they
need and that will benefit them more than self-help gurus or life coaches.
Your
practice promotion needs to continually demonstrate that YOU are the
only one
focused on their issues, concerns, values, feelings, and overall satisfaction.
As
poet
Maya Angelou has said, " ... [P]eople will forget
what you said, people
will forget what you did, but people
will ever forget how you made them feel."
What Are the 5
Promotion-Related
Problems Private Practice
Professionals
Like You Face Today?
1. Desperation and helplessness about consistently getting clients and full fees
2. Reluctance and discomfort because of the myth that promoting
yourself and your services is akin to "selling" -
"chasing after clients" and trying to
"coerce" them to "buy"
3.
Lack of a necessary value-based, education marketing
plan and strategies to add to and support your prospect-desired clinical skills
4.
Inadequate ways to track which of your promotion techniques
actually attract your prospects and get them to eagerly become your
clients
5.
Confusion about how to confidently kick-start your business
so you can not only survive but also thrive as both a
professional and businessperson.
Why Listen to Me?
I
am
a Social Psychologist, with post-graduate counseling training, and coach who has worked for over 25 years
with
solo professionals to show them how to improve their soft-sell relationship marketing,
eliminate promotion reluctance, enhance their image, and
forge dynamic interpersonal and communication strategies.
But
for nearly 10 of those early years I struggled as a private
practitioner to find
the right ways to make my business visible,
credible, and profitable ... without selling.
I spent
many thousands of dollars doing all the wrong things (sound
familiar?), such
as
-
Sending out beautiful, slick, "feature"-loaded brochures to people
in general who
did not know me and had no reason to be interested in what I
said or did
-
Buying ads in newspapers, magazines, and Yellow Pages that
my prospects might or might not see which were focused on me and not on the real emotional and life
benefits to clients they wanted to know about.
If
only I had had a soft-sell mentor then ... . I
was spinning my wheels, incredibly frustrated, and reluctant
to do the things everyone advocated because they hinted at the
unprofessional crassness of "selling."
Traditional hard-sell techniques turned my stomach. I was very conflicted and, as a
result, depressingly unsuccessful as a private practice
professional, just getting by. I was even beginning to feel
hopeless and think I was a failure.
Then, one day, I had an aha (or maybe a mental kick in the
rear) that put everything into perspective
for me. Rather than continue with what did not work, I could
market to my prospects in a focused educational, qualitative
way.
I would make it all about them (not about me). I would make it all
about the emotional
benefits (not the features of my practice) they looked for, desperately wanted, and had difficulty finding.
I would use my self-presentation, self-promotion,
educational and relationship expertise and experience to do it. Light was
dawning and hopelessness was finally fading.
This
led to my developing an education-based method that is geared
toward comfortably creating relationships with prospects and letting the
value of that education and its rapport
development demonstrate its benefits
to them.
They
would decide if what I offered fitted their needs and wants.
I did not have to compromise who I was, my
values, reputation, or credibility. I was simply sharing what I
offered for them to choose to accept.
What an incredible relief that was!
Consequently,
I know
